Derby Days

This morning I went out very early to try to get some nice pictures of the lambs as the sun was coming up slowly and still low in the sky. The lambs aren't used to me taking photos of them and so it was hard to get many good shots. I'll try again over the next few days. Eventually they'll be less afraid of me and my pointing a black thing at them.

This weekend is the Kentucky Derby. If you're looking for an excuse to throw an impromptu party, I would say this is it - even if you don't like horse racing. The first weekend in May is usually beautiful. I've been going to Derby Day parties since I was a little girl. When we moved here, I discovered that my new friend Kay (a Jersey girl too) also shared the Derby Day Party tradition. Our families have been getting together to watch and bet on the race for several years now and I look forward to this late afternoon visit and strolling in Kay's newly planted vegetable garden. I always bring my Derby Deviled Eggs and you can find my recipe here. Eggs are courtesy of my chickens who looked particularly beautiful this morning in the early morning light.

Here's this morning's April Lamb Derby under the apple trees at our farm.

Hard to tell who won though without brightly colored silks on jockeys and numbers on saddles.
